It requires the milling column, indexer and appropriate index wheel for the number of teeth required. In regard to the Unimat SL, I have attached a photo of an old sales flyer showing the recommended gear cutting arrangement for this machine. The design of a typical lathe makes gear cutting overly complicated that generally leads to accuracy and efficiency problems. In fact, cutting wheels and pinions on any Lathe, can cause issues that make it one of the least efficient methods. ![]() ![]() While it is possible to cut teeth with a Uinmat SL Lathe, it is not very practical in most cases. ![]() In addition you will need a tooth cutter of the proper tooth profile for each type and size of tooth. As others have mentioned, in order to cut gears, you need a way to accurately index a gear blank for each tooth.
